Derek Cianfrance Career
He went to the University of Colorado Boulder. While there, he studied film production under avant-garde filmmakers Stan Brakhage and Phil Solomon. At the age of 23, he wrote, directed, and edited his first feature film, Brother Tied.
The film premiered and was awarded at the International Film festival Mannheim-Heidelberg. In addition, it was well received at festivals including Sundance.
Blue Valentine, his second feature film, starred Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams. The duo was familiarised with their roles several years before filming but never met in person.
Originally, the project was slated to shoot in California, however, Cianfrance relocated to Brooklyn. For the film, there were no rehearsals and Cianfrance hardly shot more than one take per shot.
Despite having little nudity and no violence, the movie was originally given an NC-17 rating. After an appeal was filed by The Weinstein Company, the film has since been changed to an R-rating.
2011-2012
Gosling and Cianfrance worked together again on 2012 American crime drama film, The Place Beyond the Pines. The film which follows motorcycle stunt rider (Gosling) who becomes a bank robber in an effort to support his newborn son.
Ryan Gosling, Bradley Cooper, Eva Mendes, Ray Liotta, and Emory Cohen star in the film. Principal photography was done in the summer of 2011. Location filming was done in upstate New York.
His next written feature is Metalhead. The film centers on a metal drummer whose eardrums become ruptured and he becomes deaf. The film is set to feature the members of American sludge metal band, Jucifer, portraying themselves.
