On May 22, 2014, it was announced that Tognoni was cast as Phyllis Summers in CBS’s The Young and the Restless, replacing Michelle Stafford.

She made her debut on August 11, 2014. At the 42nd Daytime Emmy Awards in 2015, Tognoni was nominated for Outstanding Lead Actress for her role as Phyllis Summers. At the 44th Daytime Emmy Awards in 2017, she was again nominated for Outstanding Lead Actress for which she won.

On March 30, 2019, she confirmed she would be leaving the Young and the Restless. It was also reported that the originator of the role of Phyllis Summers, Michelle Stafford, would be returning to the show.

In 2007, she was nominated again in the same category but lost to Genie Francis. She won her second Emmy in 2008, becoming only the second actress to be a repeat winner in the Supporting Actress category. After CBS canceled Guiding Light, Tognoni returned to her role as Kelly Cramer on One Life to Live in 2009.

Young and the Restless Switcheroo: Stafford Returns, Tognoni Out!

In a rare instance of recast unicasting, The Young and the Restless is welcoming back Michelle Stafford to the role of Phyllis, as soap vet parts ways with the CBS serial. Daytime Confidential first reported on the reversal, citing multiple sources.

UPDATE: A rep for ABC’s General Hospital (where Stafford has been playing Nina) has no comment on her contract status, while Y&R yet to respond to TVLine’s request for comment. Stafford exited the role of Phyllis Summers in August 2013, after a 16-year run in which she went 2-for-10 in Daytime Emmy wins. Seven months later, she debuted on GH as Dr. Silas Clay’s presumed dead wife, Nina. Who has since married into the Cassadine family (as I understand it). Daytime Confidential hears that with her GH contract up, Stafford and ABC’s lone, solitary, remaining soap opera were unable to reach terms.

Tognoni — best known at the time for her run as One Life to Live’s Kelly Cramer — took over as Y&R‘s Phyllis a year after Stafford’s exit. In her time with the CBS sudser, she netted two Daytime Emmy nods, converting once (in 2017). During her days as Guiding Light’s Dinah, she earned her first two Daytime Emmy wins. In a statement posted to Instagram, Tognoni said, “Five years ago, I was blessed to embrace the incredible character of Phyllis Summers Abbott. I am beyond grateful for the creative experience that Y&R has given to me as well as the amazing relationships I made…. I wish Y&R continued success and everything it richly deserves.”
