James was born the eldest of two brothers and two sisters, he was born to Helen Sue (mother), a housewife, and Henry Hurst Bruderlin (father), a building contractor. While he was young he started began building and flying when he was at the age of 10 than in acting.

James began his career in featured as Craig Kenneth with his first significant film was ‘Von Ryan’s Express’ a World War II adventure film, which was released in 1965.
His film was directed by Mark Robson, was about a group of Allied Soldiers, and a daring escape they conduct by hijacking a train.

He later got featured in a popular television medical drama ‘Marcus Welby, MD’ featured as the lead role. He later got featured as a young, talented assistant physician Dr. Steven Kiley, The movie earned much popularity and appreciation.
The series later became a huge success and was one of the top-rated TV shows of that time. He as well won an Emmy Award, along with a Golden Globe Award, for his performance.
