Career
She started to sing when she was 4 years old. Her first appearance was in a syndicated music television program “Showtime at the Apollo” in 2002, where she performed Alicia’s Keys song “Fallin”.
In 2003, she performed at the Essence Awards singing Who’s Lovin You by Michael Jackson in honor of Mary J. Blige. She also made her acting debut in 2003 when she acted the role of Aretha in the TV show My Wife and Kids.
In her music career, she has shared the stage with superstars such as Stevie Wonder, Celine Dion, Alicia Keys, Josh Groban and John Mayer.
2003-2004
Before her appearing on the stage, she appeared on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno, Good Morning America and The CBS Early Show, she sang for Aretha Franklin, John Travolta, Oprah Winfrey, the King of Jordan and the President of the United States, who named her”the definition of the future”.
Still in 2003, she sang the National Anthem during the 2003 NBA All-Star Game festivals and she appeared in several movies like My Wife and Kids, Romeo and The Backyardigans.
In 2004, she sang together with he sister the hook in the song Black Girl Pain on Talib Kweli’s 2004 album, The Beautiful Struggle.
2006-2008
In 2006, she landed a role of Fantasia Barrino on the Lifetime Original movie Life Is Not a Fairytale: The Fantasia Barrino Story, a biopic about the American Idol winner from 2004.
She appeared in the musical film August Rush in 2005, playing the role of Hope, Evan’s little friend and was also the lead vocalist on the song Raise It Up from this movie. For this role, she got her first nomination in Young Artist Awards in 2008 and for Best Performance in a Feature Film – Supporting Young Actress.
On February 24, 2008, at the 80th Annual Academy Awards ceremony, she performed the Oscar-nominated original song “Raise It Up”.
Her inspiring lead performance with the Impact Repertory Theater of Harlem not only won her rave reviews, but also secured her place in the history books as the youngest African-American to perform on the prestigious worldwide telecast to date.The song was then nominated for the Academy Award for the Best Original Song.
2009-2017
She played Ana Hamilton on CBS’ daytime television opera The Young and the Restless in 2008 and on June 21, the same year, she appeared at Atlanta’s Phillips Arena on a two hour musical event called Songs of Soul and Inspiration.
This event was directed by Debbie Allen, Golden Globe, Emmy and Tony award-winning producer and choreographer. On July 18, 2009 she sang Celine Dion’s Let’s Talk About Love at the Kennedy Center as a tribute to the Apollo program’s 40th anniversary.
She has appeared in TV series in episodes of 7th Heaven and The Young and Restless. On March 28, 2017, she independently released her first EP, Simply Jamia.
