Jimmy Swaggart Biography

Jimmy Swaggart (Full name- Jimmy Lee Swaggart) is an American Pentecostal evangelist who was born on March 15, 1935, Ferriday, Louisiana, U.S. In 1971, Swaggart’s TV ministry started and has a viewership both in the U.S. and internationally. A Study in the Word programs and the weekly Jimmy Swaggart Telecast are broadcast throughout the U.S., over the Internet, and on 78 channels in 104 other countries. Swaggart’s telecast was transmitted to over 3,000 stations and cable systems each week in the 1980s during its height. Swaggart owns and operates the SonLife Broadcasting Network currently.

The Assemblies of God defrocked Swaggart following sexual scandals with prostitutes in the late 1980s and early 1990s. He temporarily stepped down as the head of Jimmy Swaggart Ministries at the height of the sexual scandals.

Jimmy Swaggart Family | Early Life

Jimmy Swaggart is the cousin of both country music star Mickey Gilley and rock’n’roll pioneer Jerry Lee Lewis. He had a younger sister named Jeanette Ensminger, 1942–1999. When young, Swaggart attended a small, 25-member Assemblies of God church in Ferriday with his parents. Aged just 17 years, he married 15-year-old Frances Anderson. He met her in 1952, in church while he was playing music with his father.

Swaggart and his wife Frances have a son named Donnie. In order to support his young family, he took up several part-time odd jobs and also started singing Southern Gospel music at various churches. According to his autobiography, Swaggart and his family survived on a $30 per week salary and therefore live in Pastors’ houses, church basements and small motels.
