Millicent Simmonds Biography

Millicent Simmonds is a deaf American actress best known for her roles as Rose in the 2017 drama film Wonderstruck and Regan Abbott in the 2018 horror film A Quiet Place.
She will be part of the Broadway adaptation of Levi Holloway’s play,Grey House,which is set to be premiered on May 30, 2023.
Early Life
Millicent began acting at an early age, she was a member of the drama club at her school, Jean Massieu School of the Deaf.
She performed at the Utah Shakespeare Festival in Cedar City, Utah and also performed on the film “Color the World” while attending Mueller Park Junior High School.
Simmonds had read Wonderstruck when it was published in 2011, a deaf-themed juvenile novel. Simmonds got the news about the open casting for the film adaptation (released in 2017) from her former drama teacher and auditioned for a role in the film.
When she won the role she moved to New York City together with her mother and her younger siblings to film Wonderstruck. She used American Sign Language interpreters to communicate on set and also received a tutor to continue schoolwork while filming.
She partnered with Circle of Confusion Television Studios in July 2021,to star in and executive produce a TV adaptation of the 2022 deaf-themed book True Biz by Sara Novic.

Millicent was born to Emily Simmonds (mother)and Dustin Simmonds(father). Her mother had to learn American Sign Language and taught the other family members so that they could communicate with Simmonds.

Simmonds joined Jean Massieu School of the Deaf at the age of three where she participated in its drama club. After completing sixth grade, she mainstreamed at the Mueller Park Junior High School in the fall of 2015.

In 2018 Millicent played the role of Regan Abbott in the horror film Quiet Place. Regan was a deaf daughter of a hearing couple.
At first, the producers did not specifically plan to cast a deaf actress but John Krasinski, who was also a cast and director who pushed to have a deaf actress.
