Mitchell P. Rales, popularly known as Mitchel Rales is an American billionaire businessman and a collector of modern and contemporary art. He co-founded Danaher Corporation in 1983 and is the chairman of its executive committee.

Mitchell Rales Family Foundation | Museum| Glenstone
Mitchell, together with his wife Emily developed and financed a contemporary art museum in Potomac, Maryland called Glenstone. The museum was first opened in 2006 and displays the Rales’ collection of post-World War II art which includes paintings, sculptures, and both indoor and outdoor installations. He had purchased the Potomac, Maryland property, a former fox hunting club, in order to build a home in 1986 and thereafter began collecting art for that home. The museum’s initial 30,000 square foot Modernist limestone gallery opened in 2006 and admitted visitors two days a week and its seven years of existence it admitted 10,000 visitors.
In 2018, a major $219 million expansion to Glenstone was opened, that increased both the gallery space and the wooded land surrounding the galleries. The expansion completed the same year and the museum was open to the public on October 4, 2018. Glenstone is free and open to the public via online booking. Later after the expansion, Glenstone continued to acquire adjacent properties including lots containing residential homes. Glenstone is staffed by recent college graduates through its “Emerging Professionals Program”, a two-year program for aspiring curators and this uninformed staff is stationed in the galleries to answer questions from visitors about the art.
