Nadya Suleman Marriage and divorce

She married Marco Gutierrez in 1996, and later separated in 2000. Marco filed for divorce in November 2006 but was finalized in January 2008. Marco in an interview with Inside Edition he explained their divorce was due to failed attempts to have children. In 1997 she began IVF treatments at the age of 21. Dr. Michael Kamrava supervised her for that period but he was later expelled from the American Society for Reproductive Medicine in October 2009.

She gave birth to her first child, a son in 2001. She gave birth to her first daughter in 2002 and continued to IVF treatments which resulted in three further pregnancies.

Nadya Suleman Octuplets

She stated that she had six embryos left over from her previous IVF treatments in 2009. She requested all of the remaining embryos be transferred into her uterus at once. Normally a woman of her age would have a maximum of two or three embryos transferred. She said that part of her reasoning for attempting the sixth pregnancy was so that the frozen embryos not be destroyed.

California Medical Board investigation found that Kamrava had transferred twelve embryos, which the board found to be an “extreme” departure from the standard of care. Kamrava’s medical license was revoked effective from July 1, 2011.

The octuplets news caused an international media sensation. There was a largely negative response from the public which included death threats. Many people were concerned that her decision for more children would burden taxpayers via public support.

She bought a new house in La Habra in March 2009 and many people questioned where the octuplets would be released from the hospital, while she expressed her concern about losing custody.

On January 26, 2010, the octuplets celebrated their first birthday. In an interview with In touch Weekly, she said “I hate babies, they disgust me… Obviously, I love them—but I absolutely wish I had not had them.” She later stated she did not give an interview with the magazine, but a recorded audio tape surfaced three weeks later.
