Sloane Stephens is an American professional tennis player. She has ranked inside the top 10 by the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA), and also achieved a career-best ranking of No. 3 in the world in the summer of 2018. Stephens became the 2017 US Open champion and has won six WTA singles titles in total.

She was born to athletic parents with backgrounds in collegiate swimming and professional American football, Stephens was first introduced to tennis at the club across the street from her house in Fresno, California. Sloane’s stepfather was a competitive recreational tennis player and served as her primary inspiration at the beginning of playing the sport.

Career Beginnings

She moved to Florida to train at a tennis academy, ultimately working with Nick Saviano for several years. She developed into a promising junior player, she reached a career-high ITF junior ranking of world No. 5 and winning three out of four Grand Slam girls’ doubles titles in 2010 together with her partner Tímea Babos.

At the 2013 Australian Open, Stephens was still only 19 years old and rose to prominence with a semifinal run highlighted by an upset of the then world no. 3 Williams Serena.

Although she ascended to no. 11 She later regressed towards the end of that year and remained steadily out of the top 25 by the end of 2015. In 2006, at the age of 13, Stephens began competing in low-level events on the ITF Junior Circuit. Her first breakthrough result came with Mallory Burdette at the US Open in 2008, where she reached her first double final in a Grand Slam. She finished the year with a semifinal appearance at the Orange Bowl Tournament at the high level, a Grade A event.

In 2009, Stephens won her first two tournaments of the year, the Grade 1 USTA Spring International Championships and the Grade A Italian Open. After these great titles, she only played in the remaining junior Grand Slam events in 2009 and 2010 and skipped the Australian Open.

At the French Open, Stephens extended her main draw to 16 matches in a row to begin the season, although he had to qualify for the main draw, before losing French junior Kristina Mladenovic in the semifinals.

Stephens returned from injury to the Auckland Open and the Hobart International season but lost in both tournaments in the second round. She entered the Australian Open without seed and faced a difficult draw in the first round against Victoria Azarenka.

For the third consecutive year, Azarenka eliminated Stephens. Stephens’ first two successful year tournaments were held in March at the Premier Mandatory Events. She reached the 4th round at the Indian Wells Open, where she lost a world match of three.

Stephens kept a steady ranking all year round and did not fall below No. 45 while rising no higher than No. 28. She finished the season at No. 30 in the world.In the offseason, Stephens hired Kamau Murray to start coaching her.

Murray’s partnership proved successful immediately. At the Auckland Open, Stephens won her first tournament with the two of them together.

Due to a rain suspension, she was forced to play the end of her semifinal match against No. 17 Caroline Wozniacki as well as the entire final against Julia Görges on the same day to claim the title. During the season, Stephens would win two more WTA titles.

Her second title of the year came to the Mexican Open, too. Her third and final year title was on clay at the Charleston Open, a low-level premiere event.

During the semifinals of this tournament, she defeated No. 2 Angelique Kerber, who needed to retire in the second set due to an illness. Part of her prize in Charleston included a car from the title sponsor Volvo, which Stephens was unaware of until after they were done with the tournament.

Stephens semifinal was against No. 9 Venus Williams. After the two lopsided split sets, Stephens won a tight third set to reach her first Grand Slam singles final. Madison Keys had won the other semifinal against CoCo Vandeweghe.

Stephens closed out the tournament by defeating Madison Keys in straight sets to win her first Grand Slam tournament title. Stephens became the first American woman other than the Williams sisters to win a major title since Jennifer Capriati won the Australian Open in 2002. She was also the first to win the US Open since Lindsay Davenport in 1998. She became the lowest-ranked US Open champion ever, and also the fifth-lowest at any Grand Slam tournament.

Despite winning the second biggest title in her career, Stephens could not finish the quarterfinals at any of her French Open Preparation Tournaments.

The highlight of her clay-court season leading up to the French Open was the semi-finals of the Fed Cup on the road to France. While here she won both her singles over Pauline Parmentier and Kristina Mladenovic, leading the United States to a 3-2 win.
