Furtick’s Home

Steven Furtick’s House

Steven and his wife Holly built a home on 19 acres of land in Waxhaw, North Carolina, a suburb of Charlotte in 2013. The home was valued at $1.78 million.  However, Steven said that his home was paid for with money from his book sales and publisher advances, rather than his salary from Elevation Church.

The church refused to answer questions about Steven’s salary, his tax-free housing allowance, and how much he makes from books and speaking fees.

Elevation Church said that Steven is generous to the church with the money he receives from writing books, arranges for the church to purchase his books directly from the publisher at the author’s discount and keep the money from sales, and that the publisher pays the church to produce marketing materials to promote steven’s books.

The Church said that Steven’s salary is set by a board composed of other pastors, who vote on his salary based on a compensation study conducted by an outside firm.

Steven does not vote on his own salary.  Steven’s response to the news report, before his sermon on the weekend of October 27, 2013, he addressed the congregation directly, saying “he was sorry if the house and surrounding questions caused them to have difficult conversations with co-workers, friends and neighbors.”

Steven Furtick  Church

Steven  moved to Charlotte and began Elevation Church. On February 5, 2006 the church had their first service.

Elevation church is based in Matthews, North Carolina. It has 17 locations, with 9 in the Charlotte area, as well as locations in Raleigh; Winston-Salem; Roanoke Virginia; Melbourne Florida; and the Greater Toronto

Steven is known for  speaking  at events all over the world including the 2011 Global Leadership Summit hosted by Bill Hybels,  C3 Conference 2012, hosted by Ed Young Jr.,  Hillsong Conference 2012 hosted by Brian Houston,  and the Presence Conference in 2012 and 2013 hosted by Phil Pringle.

He also participated in The Elephant Room 1 and The Elephant Room 2 hosted by James MacDonald.  Steven was named to Oprah’s SuperSoul100 list of visionaries and influential leaders in 2016.

Steven made headlines in 2007 when his church gave $40,000 to members in envelopes with $5, $20, even $1,000, and told them to spend it kindly on others.

Elevation Church has given more than $100 million to local and global outreach partners since 2006 under Steven’s leadership. A partnership with Charlotte Mayor Anthony Foxx was established in 2011 to give 100,000 hours and $750,000 to serve the people of Charlotte.

Steven has hosted a week-long outreach in February since 2010 at Elevation Church called Love Week.

During the church’s 2010 Love Week, thousands of Elevation members packed more than 10,000 sandwiches for the homeless, helped single mothers get their cars serviced, donated blood, cleaned up parks and streets, built a soccer field for local ministries and renovated buildings.  Steven led Elevation and over 25 other local churches to serve more than 34,000 hours in a single week in 2011.

In 2012, Elevation partnered with 31 local churches to serve 62 outreach organizations for a total of 50,340 hours around the city of Charlotte. More than 4,800 volunteers from Furtick’s church and other local churches served at more than 400 events, building houses, stocking food pantries, feeding the hungry and homeless, and holding a senior prom for elderly nursing home residents.

Furtick and Elevation Church also partnered with Presbyterian Hospital-Matthews to pledge $80,000 to help fund enhancements and expansion at a local free clinic.

In response to a need of 1,000 mentors for students in area schools in 2012, Steven launched an outreach program at Elevation Church called the M1 Initiative. He stated, “We have always said we want to be a blessing to our city and support our leaders with a volunteer force they can count on.”

More than 1,600 members responded and committed to mentoring a child for the 2012–2013 school year.  The LGBT community raised concerns about the initiative and the well-being of LGBT students in the program because Furtick had publicly called homosexuality a sin.

Steven Furtick Quotes

  • The reason we struggle with insecurity is because we compare our behind-the-scenes with everyone else’s highlight reel.”
  • Great moves of God are usually preceded by simple acts of obedience
Enjoy the journey, because the destination is a mirage
  • One of the Enemy’s most effective strategies is to get you to focus on what you don’t have, what you used to have, or what someone else has that you wish you had. He does this to keep you from looking around and asking, “God, what can You do through what I have?”
  • Stop waiting for what you want, and start working what you have. This can turn your greatest frustration into your greatest potential innovation. If you’ll do your part, God will begin to do what only He can do: He’ll make your box bigger.
  • Every second you spend wishing God would take away a struggle is a forfeited opportunity to overcome.
  • The One who lives outside of time invites you into a reality that is informed by His perfect plans to give you hope and a future. God speaks in the past tense about battles you’re currently fighting. And He buries the shame of yesterday in order to resurrect the moment you are in and sustain you in the season He is calling you to embrace.
  • Audacious faith is not passive. Neither is audacious prayer. Every aspiration you have in prayer needs an accompanying action. Otherwise you’re not really praying. You’re just pontificating.
