While in high school, Jessica took lessons to obtain a private pilot license, with a goal to become a commercial pilot for the airlines. She then studied meteorology at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Daytona Beach, Florida.
Jessica later joined the school’s Reserve Officer Training Corps, after realizing that the military could help pay for college. In 2019 she was commissioned as an Army officer. She then got picked up at an ABC station in Redding, California.
She took a year off from her broadcast job to go to flight school and become a pilot in the Cal Guard.

Military Pilot | Aviation Officer | UH-60 Blackhawk Helicopter Pilot

Jessica’s love for weather and climate saw her begin working on her private pilot’s license at the age of 15. While in high school, Burch took lessons to obtain a private pilot license, with a goal to become a commercial pilot for the airlines.
She later attended Reserve Officer Training Corps, with an interest in MEDEVAC operations; where pilots are responsible for flying patients to safety.
‘The best day of my life was finding out that Army National Guard was an option which allowed me to become a MEDEVAC pilot. Because the National Guard is a part-time service component, I could still pursue my other career passion as a broadcast meteorologist,’’ she said.
In 2009, Jessica was commissioned into the army and short after was picked up at an ABC station in Redding, California. She took a year off from her broadcast job to go to flight school and become a pilot in the Cal Guard.
After returning from flight school, she finished her contract in Redding and was hired at her current position at CBS in the Bay Area.
‘’This is a fantastic position to be hired onto so early in my career, so now I flu part time and still do the news, which are the two most amazing careers I can imagine having,’’ Jessica said.
